The Surfer’s Prayer

My stoked six-year-old son, Samuel, surfing South Carolina

Almighty God our Father, Whose Mighty Hand has formed the land and sea and eternal sky, we thank Thee for the sport of surfing; for the ocean that mirrors the weather of the sky – serene, calm, gay, angry; and for the wind that causes waves to rise and race like white-maned horses of the sea.

Bless every club and surfer today as they combine physical strength, alert minds, and enthusiastic spirit in this contest of skills.

May they keep the rules, keep faith with their comrades, keep a stout heart in defeat and humility in victory. May each one try hard to win, but lose gracefully if necessary.

Give everyone a generous attitude towards his opponent, and the spirit of fair play and courtesy; and may all receive the joy of keen competition. Now, let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish Thou this sport of our Alii upon us. Amen.
